What is Cannabis Decarboxylation?
Cannabis decarboxylation (βdecarbingβ) is the process of heating cannabis so its main active compounds become usable by your body. Think of it as "activating" the cannabis.
Why Decarboxylation Matters
Raw cannabis isn't fully "activated." Gentle heat changes THCA into THC, making it ready for use in edibles, oils, and infusions. Without this step, your finished product may be much less potent than expected.
Why Lower Temperatures Take Longer
The THCA-to-THC reaction happens slower at lower temperatures. The benefit is preservation: a longer, cooler decarb keeps more delicate cannabinoids and aromatic terpenes intact, protecting both potency and flavour.
Why High Temperatures Reduce Potency
More heat isn't always better. High temperatures can activate cannabis faster, but they also increase the chance of losing THC and delicate terpenes. The goal is to use just enough heatβnot more than you need.

Edible Shelf Life Calculator
Pick your homemade cannabis edible to see how long it stays fresh in the pantry, fridge, and freezer β plus potency tips and food-safety guidance.

Turn this on if your recipe uses perishable add-ins β storage times shorten and refrigeration is required.
Storage recommendations
Potency Preservation
THC potency stays relatively stable when edibles are kept cool, dark, and airtight. Heat, oxygen, moisture, and sunlight gradually degrade cannabinoids over time, so colder storage helps protect both freshness and strength.

Actual shelf life depends on your exact recipe, ingredients, preparation methods, hygiene, and storage conditions. Always use an airtight container, label edibles with the date prepared, and keep them out of reach of children and pets.
