Sugar is an essential ingredient for countless recipes, and it is also incredibly easy to infuse cannabinoids into. Unlike other infused ingredients like cannabutter or infused coconut oil, cannabis infused sugar is water soluble. This makes it a go-to infusion ingredient for those who enjoy cannabis infused drinks. Our cannabis sugar recipe is ridiculously easy to make and you can make some within a few hours to a couple days depending on your evaporation method.
Today, we will be teaching you how to make cannabis sugar at home – quick and easy.
What do you need to make cannabis sugar?
You don’t need any special equipment to make cannabis infused sugar at home, however you will need some high proof alcohol (like everclear) or a pre-made cannabis alcohol tincture. If you do not have a pre-made tincture to use for this recipe, check out our guide on how to make it (it is also very simple to make). Apart from the tincture, the only other ingredient you need is sugar. You can use any kind you like. If you want that nice greenish coloured sugar, use white sugar.
What Can I Do With CannaSugar?
Weed infused sugar is one of my favourite infusion ingredients because it is extremely versatile. You can infuse cannabinoids into so many different recipes with it. Certain recipes like drinks will not allow you to use an infused oil without them separating and leaving you with a blob of oil on top of your drink. But that is not an issue for weed sugar because it is water soluble!
Here are a few recipes that you could use cannasugar in:
- Infused Raspberry Lemonade
- Double Infused Vinaigrette (infused olive oil + cannasugar)
- Infused Sweet Crepes
- Infused Sugar Dip (strawberries are delicious dipped in cannasugar)
- Weedy Hot Chocolate
You could even put the cannasugar into ice cube moulds to make cannabis infused sugar cubes. Simply fill the ice cube tray with cannasugar then put a couple drops of water on each cube. Allow to dry overnight then pop them out of the tray and store in an airtight jar.
How To Make Cannasugar
Before we get started – make sure you have the 2 ingredients ready. Alcohol cannabis tincture and a dry sugar of your choice. Cannabis tincture is very easy to make – it is pretty much just letting decarboxylated weed soak in alcohol for a while.
Once you’ve got your cannabis tincture, proceed to the recipe below.
BEWARE: NO FIRE OR FLAMES!
The alcohol in the cannabis tincture is highly flammable. Making cannabis infused sugar involves evaporating off the alcohol so proper ventilation and precautions are required.
There are 2 methods you can use for drying & evaporation – air drying, or assisted heat drying. Using the heat drying method is much quicker but you need to do it in a well ventilated area, away from any fire or open flames. Air drying without using any heat or warmth to speed up the evaporation can take a few days to fully evaporate all the alcohol from your cannasugar.
Easy Cannabis Infused Sugar Recipe
- 2 Cups Sugar (any type of sugar will work)
- 1 Cup Cannabis Tincture (alcohol based)
- Place the sugar into a glass or ceramic baking dish.
- Pour the cannabis alcohol tincture onto the sugar.
- Mix the sugar and tincture together, making sure that the sugar is well coated.
- Move the baking dish to a safe location for air drying. It can take anywhere from 12-72 hours for the alcohol to fully evaporate. Stir the mixture frequently while it dries. To speed up evaporation, you can use heat. Read the recipe notes for tips on speeding up evaporation using heat.
- Your cannabis infused sugar is ready once all of the alcohol has evaporated and the mixture no longer looks wet. By the time it is done it should look like dry sugar again.
- Put your newly made weed infused sugar into an air tight container and store in a cool, dry spot.
What Should My Cannabis Sugar Look Like When It’s Done?
The colour of your cannabis sugar can depend on many factors. The type of sugar you used, the strength and concentration of your tincture, and even the weed you used to make your tincture/cannasugar. The bottom line is, once it is fully dry (alcohol tincture fully evaporated and no wet patches), then your cannasugar is done and ready to use. If your weed sugar is still slightly wet or damp, it is not ready yet.
The colour of your cannasugar can range from light green to yellow or golden brown. The colour is not an indicator of potency so do not think your sugar is not strong just because it didn’t change colour much during the infusion process.
